It was#passed down to my husband.
APPRAISER: And your father-i right?
GUEST: Well, he was a physicist# and, uh, and so was#my husband,## so they were very interested in# Einstein#and everything about him.
APPRAISER: Right, it has# double#physicist provenance.
GUEST: Yes.
to the#student body at Caltech in# 1931.
It's a short speech and in it,## he is talking about whether or not technological# advancements#are#a good thing for humanity.
He says, "Why does this#magnificent# applied science, which saves work and## makes life easier, bring us so little# happiness?
The simple answer runs: Because we have not yet#learned# to make a sensible use of it.
"# He's not#there yet but he's making the move from# Germany#to... eventually, he will What I like#about this letter is the way he# really boils down#to the simplest essence, the issue of whether#or not technological# progress is necessarily a#good thing.# What is not great about this letter# is that there is some... frankly,## racist language about#indigenous cultures.
He makes an analogy between indigenous peoples,## who he describes as happy,# and#modern industrialized society which he describes#as not happy.
We don't# know who typed it.
We don't#know if it's## the speech he read from or if it's... what I,## what is probably more likely it might# be a transcript that was produced to## be distributed to the press which some# enterprising young student#had him sign.
But to have him sign this speech with# that powerful message is really makes## this#such a powerful document .
