He'd# been successful# He went to New York, to# the#Grand Central Art Gallery.
This caught his#eye immediately and he bought it,## brought it home,#and it was# in his home for 75 years.
And when#he died, my grandmother lived for another# 25 years#and then I inherited it from her in 1968.
APPRAISER: It is a#wonderful example of# his art.
Pushman was born in#Armenia and## in fact studied in, uh, the institute#in Istanbul.
His family later, uh, came to the#United States,## initially in Chicago.# He#traveled all over the world.
But he was very interested in the#arts of Asia.
The Asian figure is highlighted#between a# symbol of rebirth with the blossom#on the r and also with the really delicately#fading# away rose in the, in the, in the small vase.
And that speaks to his great interest in# the mysticism and the spiritualism of Asia,# and a#much different way of looking# at things than#New York 1922.
The other thing that I found#interesting about# the artist is that he sometimes#wrote about the## paintings and passed his thoughts on to, uh, to# the new buyers.
Do you have something#from your## family at all that came along with this painting?# GUEST: Yes, the artist wrote to my grandfather,## uh, after he purchased the painting.# He said, "I'm pleased to learn from## the Grand Central Art#Galleries that you# purchased my painting 'The Persian Book' and you express the desire to know# the artist... from the artist the## spiritual meaning of the painting my# paintings are compositions of#a past## that probably never existed# except in my#own imagination and I use art objects of# the#Orient, as in your painting.
My little goddess#on the side expresses# a mysterious beauty of a#fading rose.
This represents my past joys,## which#I imagine is written in the# opening pa Next to the figure is the branch#of buds,# which whispering hopes of coming spring.
"#-## Kind of as you indicated - uh, "I hope you will# find this uh, interesting and informative."
APPRAISER: How wonderful.
And he sign- GUEST: "Very truly yours, AP PRAISER: Have you talked about# the value with anyone re GUEST: Um, I only#went online and, and# looked at recent I don't know how accurate they were.#So,# $40,000 to $50,000 was what I was seeing APPRAISER: Well, for#auction at this# point that would seem a little#high.## At auction we we' be looking at# somewhere#near $15,000 to $25,000.
That said, given the quality,#s yle, provenance,## literature about the painting I think it should be# insured at somewhere between#$50, GUEST: OK.

APPRAISER: It's#one of the# best I've ever seen.
It has## lovely#movement and lovely quiet at the same time.
