And taxes.
Whoa!
- Whoa!
- Oh, I'm Corey with "Compact Civics".
(relaxing music) I get it!
Nobody likes paying taxes.
(graphics popping) It's expensive, it's mandatory, and it's hard to know where your dollars are being spent.
Let me break it down.
(record player scratches) We pay federal and state income taxes on the money we earn from jobs, businesses, or investments.
The money goes into a big general fund to help pay for things like national infrastructure, defense, veterans, our justice system, and paying down our national debt.
Payroll taxes are different.
You and your employer both pay them and the money fund Social Security and Medicare, which benefits older and disabled Americans who rely on that assistance.
Do you own property?
Local governments tax you based on its value, but that money helps fund local services like schools and public safety.
We could all look at taxes like our patriotic duty.
To make sure your money's being spent the way you want, get out to the polls and vote for someone who will do just that.
