They came from a good family.
They have a support system.
But inside they're struggling, and they just they're scared to speak out.
Suburbs, everybodys like, “Oh, you live in the suburbs.
Thats nice.
Youre safe.
You're sound.” Nobody's safe and sound anymore.
It's sort of one of those things to where it's like, let's shove it in the closet and try and make everything look good, like it's not really happening.
But thats not the truth.
It's happening everywhere.
And the suburbs are getting hit hard.
[fountain flowing] Aurora, where I live.
It's very peaceful.
But honestly, it could affect anybody.
It could affect anybody that's going through anything in their lives that don't know how to be vulnerable and talk to people about their problems.
The reason why I started using fentanyl, I was at a very dark place in my life.
From using meth, I caught those couple of cases.
I thought I was going back to prison for the rest of my life.
[car door opening] At that time, I was thinking, like, “Man,” you know, “I'm going to lose my son again.
I'm going to lose my freedom again.” I just didn't care about if I live or died at that time.
And my son don't deserve that.
My mom doesn't deserve that.
I don't deserve that.
Nobody does.
It's hard when you see families have to tell the kids, “You got to go.
I can't have you in my life.
You can't come back here.” Community Medical Services, they're opening six clinics just like this.
They're going out towards the suburbs.
They want it to be to where everybody, wherever they live at, where they can get into a clinic.
It's where you're able to finally open up and say, “You can't hurt me no more.
I know my truth.” [birds chirping] My whole life, I've I've always been ashamed of my addictions.
You just got to be vulnerable and ask for help.
Community Medical Services, they set you up with the doctor, they find you the right dosage of methadone and counseling.
That's why I'm here.
Because I knew I couldn't do it alone.
And I had to reach out for help and take that next step.
My name is Richard Tafoya, and I'm here to talk about overcoming addiction.
[rising music] [birds chirping]
