(upbeat music) I'm Cory, and this is "Compact Civics."
(upbeat music) (gentle music) One thing about me, (gentle upbeat music) I love voting, but what I love most is casting my vote in an election (citizens grumbling) - [Citizens] Can one vote really make a difference?
- All right, all right, I hear your doubts, but yes, it really can.
Check this out.
In 2002, a police officer in Washington State was running in the primary for the State House of Representatives.
Out of nearly 12,000 votes, he came up one vote short, and here's the kicker.
A fellow officer and friend, possibly former friend, forgot to mail in his ballot and left it sitting on his kitchen counter next to the water bill and half-eaten toast.
And right here in Western New York, the town supervisor election in Barre in Orleans County came down to a narrow five-vote difference.
There are more than 2,000 people in Barre, and only 600 people voted.
So you see, one is not the loneliest number.
It can be one of the most important numbers when it comes to our democracy.
