- You know when you're taking a test in class and your teacher starts walking around to make sure no one's cheating?

That's essentially what a poll watcher does.

(light jazzy music) New York state law allows poll watchers to observe voting at the polls to ensure fair and honest elections.

They are designated by candidates, political parties, or independent organizations which have candidates on the ballot.

They can only talk to you if they think you're pulling some funny business with your votes, but they can't try to make you vote in a specific way.

That's totally illegal, and you should report those shenanigans right away.

Just like teachers make sure you're the one taking your test and not your friend who already took the test, poll watchers ensure that each person only votes one time and under their own name.

So this year when you go out to vote, see if you can spot a poll watcher.

And, remember, they are there to have your back.
